Virginia's 2nd Congressional District · Independent · 2026

I used to call myself a radical moderate. I believed in bipartisanship as a civic virtue. That time has passed - not because the center has failed, but because one party has abandoned honest governance entirely, and the other cannot win this district alone.

Someone has to stand up and tell the truth - about January 6th, about the national debt, about a war launched without congressional authorization, about billionaire donors who have purchased our courts and our policies.

I am running as an independent because that is the only way I can say all of these things without checking where the party stands first. Party candidates cannot do that. They will not do that. I will.

I can say the 2020 election was not stolen. I can say a woman has a right to choose. I can say the Constitution guarantees the right to bear arms. I can say all of these things in the same breath - because I answer to the voters of Virginia's 2nd District, not to a party.

Matt Baker

WHY I'm Running

This moment demands it.

Party candidates have chosen to be part of a system that silences them. Cross the party, lose the money. Cross the party, lose the election. That fear has produced an abdication of Congress's most basic duty: to legislate, to negotiate, to find the better compromise. Both parties would rather embrace chaos and polarization than the common good — and neither offers a way out. Nowhere is that clearer than the national debt: $40 trillion and climbing, built by both parties over 36 years. Neither party will change. It is time to make the people and the country — not the parties — the priority.

"Patriotism is supporting your country all the time, and your government when it deserves it."

— Mark Twain

What party candidates won't say out loud.

that Baker can and will

The election process is secure and the  2020 election was not stolen.

A woman has a right to choose.  I hope she chooses life.  The government should respect both positions and make every effort to stay out of it.

Billionaire donors and their Super PACs have too much power — this campaign refuses their donations and the untraceable money that comes with them.

The moment you start worrying about the next election, you stop doing the job you were elected for. I work for you — not for my own reelection.

Firing the CJCS, CNO, Coast Guard Commandant, Army COS and more than two dozen other high ranking flag officers did not make us stronger. Removing selected officers from promotion lists does not make us stronger.

Climate Change is Real. Norfolk has the highest rate of sea-level rise on the East Coast. Hampton Roads floods on sunny days. That is not a debate — it is an engineering problem, and this district needs a representative who will treat it like one.

The Second Amendment is the law of the land. Common-sense regulation is also the law of the land.

Israelis and Palestinians both deserve a lasting peace, one where children and innocents are safe and prosperity is possible. AIPAC, PAL PAC, and big money on both sides of this issue reward conflict and punish compromise. I will not be bought, and I will say when I believe leaders on both sides, including our own in the US, are wrong.

This campaign is supported by voters like you
