FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Baker Disavows Super PAC Mailer Using His Name and Photos
Independent candidate in Virginia’s 2nd District did not authorize, fund, or coordinate the mailing. FEC records show three layers of committees and nonprofits behind it, and no individual donors.
NORFOLK, Va. (October 26, 2026) — Matt Baker, independent candidate for Virginia’s 2nd Congressional District, today disavowed a mailer sent to district voters by Progressive Champions PAC. One side of the mailer presents Baker as “the independent choice for Congress.” The other side attacks Democratic candidate Elaine Luria. Baker and his campaign did not authorize, design, pay for, or coordinate the mailing, and have had no contact with the PAC.
“I didn’t ask for this, and I don’t want it,” said Baker. “Their own flyer says I reject billionaire donors and super PACs. A super PAC paid to print it.”
Federal Election Commission records show Progressive Champions PAC registered as a super PAC on May 11, 2026. It reports no individual donors. All $1.55 million in contributions it has reported came from a single committee, Conservative Americans PAC. That committee’s FEC reports list only two contributors, both organizations, giving a combined $39 million. No individual donor is named. Ninety percent came from American Prosperity Alliance, a nonprofit that describes itself as a 501(c)(4) social welfare organization and is not required to publicly disclose its donors. The rest came from Lone Star Freedom Project, Inc.
“This flyer was paid for by three layers of committees and nonprofits, and not one donor’s name is mentioned,” said Baker. “That’s how special-interest money is trying to shape this election, here in the 2nd District and across the country. Independent means no party, not a lean toward one. It means no PAC money, and it means I’m nobody’s spoiler.”
“This isn’t a one-party problem,” Baker continued. “Both parties pay to boost candidates they think will help them win. Voters deserve to know who is spending money to shape their choice, and candidates should say plainly when they don’t want it. I’m saying it.”
Baker noted the mailer left out much of his platform, including fiscal responsibility and the national debt, military readiness and shipyard capacity, gun rights paired with responsible ownership, and immigration reform. “If you want to know where I stand, hear it from me, not from a PAC. It’s all at mattbakerindependent.com.”
